Clinic (CL2): Server Management
This clinic provides an overview of how Windows Server 2008 eases the task of managing and securing multiple server roles in an enterprise with a variety of new features and technologies. Includes 90-minute hands-on lab session.
These sessions are aimed at IT Professionals currently experienced on the technologies included in Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003, and who hold an MCSE or MCSA certification and/or equivalent knowledge.
Pre-Requisites:
IT Professionals skilled on the technologies included in Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003.Training Course Overview/Content:
CL1: Branch OfficeSession 1: Server Deployment and Administration
After completing this session, students will be able to:
• Identify the changes to Active Directory Domain Services in Windows Server 2008
• Identify new server roles that will benefit a branch office environment and how to implement them
• Identify file service improvements that will benefit a branch office environment
• Identify print service improvements that will benefit a branch office environment
Session 2: Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC)
After completing this session, students will be able to:
• Identify the benefits of a RODC
• Explain how RODC mitigates branch office challenges
• Identify the features of a RODC
• Identify the steps for deploying a RODC
Session 3: Branch Office Security
After completing this session, students will be able to:
• Identify Branch Office challenges
• Identify the value propositions of using Windows Server 2008 in a Branch Office environment
Lab exercises CL1:
After completing this hands-on session, students will be able to:
• Use Server Manager
• Implement a RODC
• Implement a Read-Only DFS
• Implement BitLocker Technology
CL2: Server Management
Session 1: Server Manager/Initial Configuration Tasks
This session will provide a high-level overview of the new server roles and features available in Windows Server 2008
Session 2: Windows PowerShell
This lesson will provide a general introduction to Windows PowerShell and how it can be utilized to streamline management of multiple servers.
Session 3: Remote Management
This lesson will provide an overview of the Windows Remote Shell environment and how administrators can use Windows Remote Management to streamline management of servers across the enterprise.
Session 4: Server Core
This lesson will provide an overview of the new Server Core capabilities of Windows Server 2008 and will assist an administrator in understanding how to implement it for the purpose of reducing management and services needs while improving security.
Lab exercises CL2:
After completing this lab, students will be able to:
• Identify the tasks necessary to complete the installation of Windows Server 2008 using the Initial Configuration Tasks console.
• Summarize the steps necessary to install and configure Windows Server 2008 server roles and features using Server Manager.
• Determine Windows Server 2008 server status using Server Manager as well as evaluate the other integrated Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins available in Server Manager
• Explore Windows PowerShell
• Use WinSH/ WinRM for Remote Management
• Configure Server Core
• Install a Server Role on Server Core
• Install an Optional Feature on Server Core
• Manage Server Core
