EXERCISES:
Extensive exercises start on day one where delegates use the command line to create an Oracle 9i database. This database is then used throughout the week. Delegates will load and monitor database performance using sample data. Examples are used to show the effects of system loading and user interaction.
Pre-Requisites:
We suggest completion of our SQL*Plus Fundamentals (OSQLF) course (or equivalent experience).PL/SQL knowledge is also an advantage.
Training Course Overview/Content:
Introduction: Oracle System Architecture. Overview of components, processes and functions of Oracle 9i.Physical and logical structures: Datafiles, tempfiles, redo logs, control files, parameter file, and spfile. Tablespaces, schema objects.
Creating a database: Setting initialisation parameters. Important SQL scripts.
Maintaining a database: Starting up, mounting and opening the database. Shutdown modes. Using the data dictionary. Password file authentication. Startup, shutdown, logon & logoff triggers. Importance of checkpoint processing.
Managing disk space: The system tablespace. Locally managed tablespaces. Permanent tablespaces and datafiles. Default temporary tablespace and tempfiles. Oracle 9i tablespace block sizes. Monitoring free space. Extending tablespaces. Configuring and managing rollback segments. Implementing and managing Automatic Undo Management. Configuring redo logs.
Tables and indexes: Performance issues. Storage parameters, PCTFREE and PCTUSED. Partitioning tables and indexes. Choice of index types. Monitoring and rectifying index stagnation. Monitoring Use of indexes. DDL triggers.
Oracle 9i Specifics: Managing dynamic memory, dbms_stats package. New data types. Important new parameters for Oracle 9i. Obsolete Parameters and their replacements. System Global Area and shared memory structures. Oracle 9i multiple block sizes.
